Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Tony Langworthy and I created this blog to share my journey into the world of software development.
My Early Days in the Computer Biz
So, I’m not exactly new to the computer world. In my early 20’s, I worked in a few small computer stores as a technician. Most of that work involved replacing parts and reinstalling driver software.
As my interest in computers grew, I attended a small college and took a computer network administration course. Most of what I learned then is very outdated now, but there are still some topics that have stuck with me to this day, such as an awareness of how to secure network applications, and the importance of strong passwords. You would be shocked to know how many networks are secured with the password “password”.
Introduction to Programming
I have read a lot about people that were given a computer at an early age that came with a manual that taught programming. I wasn’t that kid. I only know of one distant relative that was in the computer business, so I wasn’t given any sort of guidance to learning this business. Everything I have learned has been from curiosity, studying and writing code.
So backing up a bit, my first bit of code I actually wrote was in Microsoft Office. I was doing some clerical work, and I realized that many things I was doing was very repetitious, and I was aware of macros, so I began digging into the docs and found out that I could create customized macros! To me, this was not only a time-saver, but sparked my interest in the power of writing code!
My Journey
My freelancing started back in 2014. I inherited a small web development project from another freelancer, and I quickly learned how much I didn’t know. I knew the very basics and I was able to keep my client happy for awhile, but as his demands and time constraints pushed me into a corner, I knew I had to find someone to take over the project.
About a year later, I began working on a small web application as a side-project to satisfy my desire to learn more about web development. I had a pretty decent working prototype, and I was very proud of myself! That was, until I began adding features… I could write code, but I still had not learned how to design software properly…
Conclusion
Software development is a complex subject, and this blog will document my progress, my struggles and my achievements. This site is NOT meant to be an authoritative source of software development or best practices, but I will do my best to provide true and accurate information.
